When you take out a health insurance policy with an insurance provider, you become the policyholder.

A policyholder is a person who takes out to cover themselves or someone else they have specified


Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. It is up to you whether you opt for the public or private health insurance system, but you must arrange health insurance cover in order to live and work in Germany. Arranging health insurance prior to arrival in Germany is a condition of obtaining a work visa or residence permit.

When you arrange health insurance cover with an insurance provider, you become the policyholder. As the policyholder, you are responsible for sharing all pertinent information with your insurance provider, paying your premiums and other costs, and ensuring that your cover is suitable for your needs and circumstances.
