The First Class Pro+ and Business Class Pro tariffs include a no-claim bonus. You will receive this if you have not claimed any benefits other than professional dental cleanings, preventive check-ups (in accordance with statutory programs) and vaccinations (except vaccinations abroad) for one year.

Flexible deductible for lower premiums

Deductible or excess means that you contribute a small percentage to your health care costs. This reduces your monthly premium, and you automatically pay less.

The good thing about ottonova: Your maximum deductible in private health insurance for employees applies to the entire year and not to each invoice. And dental care as well als preventive check-ups are excluded. This means that once the maximum yearly amount has been reached, you will no longer incur any deductible costs and you will be reimbursed 100% for all further invoices until the end of the year.

When do employees have to choose between private or public health insurance?

During your career, your salary usually increases along with your professional experience. Public health insurance, where most of the employees are insured, then becomes noticeably more expensive for many occupational groups- without the benefits improving. At the latest after a salary increase to 5,775.00 EUR gross per month, a look at private health insurance for salaried employees is interesting. Whether you qualify as a private patient depends on 2 important factors:

  • Income threshold (in German: Jahresarbeitsentgeltgrenze (JAEG)
  • Amount of gross income per year

Income limit for salaried employees

Currently, the limit for the annual income limit (JAEG) is 69,300 € per year or 5,775.00 € per month.

In addition to your salary, a Christmas bonus or vacation pay also count, provided your employer pays it regularly. The Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs adjusts the compulsory insurance threshold/JAEG annually to the general wage development.

What requirements do employees have to meet when joining private health insurance?

Your employer contributes to your private health insurance costs

In public health insurance, the employer pays 50% of the total premium for you. If you are privately insured as an employee, your employer also subsidizes your private health insurance with an employer's contribution. This also covers half of your total health insurance premium – but there is a maximum limit, based on the public health insurance contribution rate and the income threshold (421.76€).

ottonova offers comprehensive private health insurance for employees, self-employed and students, as well as supplementary insurance for persons eligible for benefits called "Beihilfe". We also offer supplementary insurance for anyone who prefers or is obliged to stay insured by public health insurance.

Lawmakers sets a minimum threshold every year, the so-called annual earning threshold. For employees, this is currently € 69,300 . If you earn more than that, you can take out private insurance. If your income falls below that, you will have to go back to public insurance. The threshold is raised annually. If you are no longer in the "green area" as a result of such a measure, you can get exempted from compulsory insurance within 3 months and stay with private health insurance.

Yes, provided you are not yet 55 years of age, and you are required to have health insurance. However, switching back to public health insurance may have its disadvantages. We would be happy to advise you on the subject. It's much harder to switch from the age of 55. Lawmakers have taken measures in this regard by introducing the basic coverage plan (Basistarif).

The so-called basic coverage plan was introduced in 2009. The basic coverage plan is like public health insurance in the private sector for private policyholders who are unable to pay their premiums, or who do not wish to pay more than they would for public health insurance. The coverage is identical to that offered by public health insurance. If you are in need of assistance, you may switch from a normal plan to the basic coverage plan.

If you don't wish to pay more than you would for public health insurance, you may do so from the age of 55 even if you are not in need of assistance. Thanks to the old-age provisions which you have accumulated over a long policy term, your basic coverage plan premium will be significantly below the maximum premium you would pay for public health insurance.

The premium payment procedure is different than in the public system. With private health insurance you pay the full premium to us at the beginning of the month. If you are employed, your employer will contribute their part to your health insurance through your salary.

Of course, your family is very welcome at ottonova. We have even come up with some special advantages for children and teenagers!

We have structured our plans such that your children will also get optimal coverage.

If you insure your family privately, you will need to pay a separate premium for each family member. As an employee, you will also get an allowance from your employer for your family's premiums.

All of your data is stored securely on a server in Germany. Only selected employees at ottonova have access to the data that is relevant to them. We only disclose your data with your consent, for example, when we make an appointment for you. This can be done conveniently via the Concierge service in your app.

The process to get your finalized contract typically takes from an hour to 14 days. It depends on the individual case. You first have to submit an application for a tariff (including answers regarding your health status). After we checked your application you will receive your final contract.

  • Health insurance premium: From the age of 60 the statutory surcharge ceases to apply.
  • The daily sickness allowance ceases from the start of retirement.
  • From then on, the premium relief component will reduce your premium month by month.
  • Health insurance subsidy: Retirees receive a subsidy of 7.3% from the retirement insurance fund as part of their retirement.

Every insured person in the First Class Pro+ and Business Class Pro plans for employees is entitled to a guaranteed no-claim bonus. The insurance coverage must have existed without interruption for the entire calendar year.

The amount of the guaranteed no-claim bonus is calculated as follows: The sum of the premiums paid (excluding the statutory surcharge) for the previous calendar year, divided by 12.

Precondition for the no-claim bonus: no claims must have been submitted in the previous calendar year. Of course, we want to support you in staying healthy and important preventive check-ups should not be neglected. That's why you can still take advantage of the following benefits and receive the no-claim bonus at the same time:

  • Benefits for preventive check-ups according to statutory programmes
  • Vaccinations (except travel vaccinations)

The premium refund will be paid out in the second half of the following year.

In private health insurance, the deductible is the out-of-pocket amount you pay towards the costs. This means that the deductible is deducted from the reimbursement amount of the invoice. The deductible is often also referred to as the excess.
