Who should be considering private health insurance?

ottonova offers comprehensive private health insurance for employees and the self-employed, as well as supplementary insurance for persons eligible for benefits called "Beihilfe". We also offer supplementary insurance for anyone who prefers or is obliged to stay insured by public health insurance. Lawmakers sets a minimum threshold every year, the so-called annual earning threshold. For employees, this is currently €64.350. If you earn more than that, you can take out private insurance. If your income falls below that, you will have to go back to public insurance. The threshold is raised annually. If you are no longer in the "green area" as a result of such a measure, you can get exempted from compulsory insurance within 3 months and stay with private health insurance.

Yes, provided you are not yet 55 years of age, and you are required to have health insurance. However, switching back to public health insurance may have its disadvantages. We would be happy to advise you on the subject. It's much harder to switch from the age of 55. Lawmakers have taken measures in this regard by introducing the basic coverage plan (Basistarif).

The so-called basic coverage plan was introduced in 2009. The basic coverage plan is like public health insurance in the private sector for private policyholders who are unable to pay their premiums, or who do not wish to pay more than they would for public health insurance. The coverage is identical to that offered by public health insurance. If you are in need of assistance, you may switch from a normal plan to the basic coverage plan.

If you don't wish to pay more than you would for public health insurance, you may do so from the age of 55 even if you are not in need of assistance. Thanks to the old-age provisions which you have accumulated over a long policy term, your basic coverage plan premium will be significantly below the maximum premium you would pay for public health insurance.

The payment is different than in the public system. With private health insurance you pay the full tariff to us at the beginning of the month. If you are employed your employer will contribute their part to your health insurance through your salary.

If you insure your family privately, you will need to pay a separate premium for each family member. As an employee, you will also get an allowance from your employer for your family's premiums.

All of your data is stored securely on a server in Germany. Only selected employees at ottonova have access to the data that is relevant to them. We only disclose your data with your consent, for example, when we make an appointment for you. This can be done conveniently via the Concierge service in your app.

The process to get your finalized contract with us typically takes around two weeks. Tariffs in private health insurance in Germany are based on the age when you enter the system and your health status.
