Compulsory insurance in Germany

By now, you probably know that health insurance – whether public or private – is compulsory for all residents in Germany. However, it is not the only form of insurance you need to look out for.

What other types of insurance will I need?

Let’s take a look at a basic overview.

Long-term care insurance

Called Pflegeversicherung in German, long-term care insurance is mandatory and included in the coverage from your health insurance provider.

Statutory accident insurance

If you move to Germany as an employee, you will automatically be covered by gesetzliche Unfallversicherung, which protects you in the event that you suffer a bodily injury or illness in the course of work or on your commute to work.

The good news is that this form of insurance is free to employees, as employers bear liability and pay the premium for it. However, employees have a duty to help prevent workplace accidents.

Self-employed people are uninsured as standard. They can register voluntarily for this insurance but have to pay the premium themselves.

What other types of insurance might I want?

Beyond car insurance, home insurance and other common types of cover, there are some other insurances you should consider for life in Germany.

Personal liability insurance

Most Germans have a "Privathaftpflichtversicherung". Although it is not compulsory, it offers valuable protection. In Germany, there is no ceiling on the damages that can be awarded if you accidentally injure somebody or inadvertently cause property damage.

Third-party liability insurance policies often protect your spouse and children. Some also cover legal expenses if someone wrongfully accuses you of injuring them or damaging their property.

Professional liability insurance

Freelancers and business owners should give careful thought to "Berufshaftpflichtversicherung", which provides protection against liability claims related to their work.
