Student Health Insurance Germany Over 30: Your Guide to Smarter Coverage
In Germany, the heavily subsidized "student rate" in public health insurance (GKV) expires at the end of the semester you turn 30. Health insurance for students is a legal requirement for anyone residing in Germany, including international students. All students must have health insurance to enroll at a university and to apply for a German student visa, and proof of health insurance is required for both processes.

What you have to know:
Students in Germany over the age of 30 are no longer eligible for the discounted student rate in the public health system. In ottonova's private health insurance you can join until 38 and be insured under the student rate until 39.
Students over 30 face a choice: "voluntary" public insurance or switching to private health insurance (PKV). But if you come to Germany after 30, you do not have public health insurance as an option.
Students over the age of 30 no longer need to be exempted from compulsory insurance because they are no longer subject to student insurance and can switch to private health insurance without the exemption.
Private health insurance can provide broader benefits and is often the more affordable option for students 30+.
Why does my status change at 30?
The German healthcare system operates on two main types of health insurance: public health insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV) and private health insurance (Private Krankenversicherung, PKV). And students have the choice between the two systems.
The "Studentische Krankenversicherung" in public health insurance is a special discount period. Since the 2020 reforms, the rule is strict: once you turn 30, the discount ends. It no longer matters how many semesters you have studied. From your 30th birthday onwards, you are no longer "compulsorily insured" as a student.
Then you must proactively choose how to continue your coverage - either voluntarily publicly insured or in private health insurance. ottonova offers specialized student plans - even for older students until the age of 39.
Are there exceptions?
You might extend the dicounted public health insurance (GKV) rate if your studies were delayed due to rare cases such as:
Raising a child or caring for a relative.
Severe illness or disability.
Military or civil service performed before starting your degree.

How much does health insurance cost for students over 30?
Public health insurance is based on income, while private health insurance is based on risk profile such as age and medical history.
Students over 30 must typically pay higher rates for public insurance as a voluntary member (voluntary public health insurance), which is about €275/month or more, as it is calculated from a fictitious minimum income.
ottonova's private health insurance tariffs for students over 30 in Germany can start at around €170 for a basic plan, but costs vary based on coverage and provider. Private insurance companies offer a range of private health insurance policies, often providing more flexible and sometimes extensive services compared to public health insurance.
How do I Apply for Private Health Insurance?
Enrolling at a German university goes hand in hand with providing you have adequate health insurance coverage. Before you can complete your university enrollment, you'll need to submit a certificate from a recognized health insurance company confirming that you have valid health insurance in Germany. This certificate must demonstrate that your insurance coverage meets all legal requirements for students.
International students can obtain this certificate from a public health insurance provider, but a private health insurance company can issue the necessary documentation as well. Ensuring your health insurance coverage is in order will make your university enrollment process smooth and stress-free.
Students over the age of 30 no longer need to be exempted from compulsory insurance because they are no longer subject to student insurance and can switch to private health insurance without exemption. But they must observe the regular notice period for voluntary statutory health insurance when switching to private health insurance:
If you're already voluntarily insured in public health insurance you can terminate the public health insurance with 2 months' notice to the end of the month
or you terminate your public health insurance on the day your status changes to voluntarily insured.
And if your premiums go up you'll have a special shorter canellation period as well.
Note: If you are eligible for private health insurance depends on your health status as well.
Can I Switch Back to Statutory Health Insurance (GKV) After My Studies?
Choosing private health insurance (PKV) as a student over 30 is a smart move for your budget and medical care, but it's not a lifetime sentence. Many expats worry that once they go private, they can never return to the statutory system (GKV).
The good news: Your status is re-evaluated the moment you transition from the lecture hall to the workplace. In the German "Solidarity system", the start of your professional career often acts as a reset button for your insurance status.
Once you land your first "real" job in Germany (an employment relationship subject to social security contributions), the path back to the public health insurance (GKV) is usually automatic - provided your salary stays within a certain range. Eligibility for private health insurance in Germany is dependent on your employment status and salary to trigger the automatic return to public insurance, your gross annual salary must be below €77,400.
Below €77,400:You typicallymust return to the public health insurance (GKV).
Above €77,400: You can stay in private health insurance (PKV) and may enjoy continued premium benefits.
Self-employment: You can stay in private health insurance regardless of your income.

FAQs for students over 30
Yes. For most students over 30, private health insurance (PKV) is significantly cheaper than "voluntary" public insurance (GKV). While GKV costs roughly €275, PKV student tariffs often start under €180, offering better dental, vision, and specialist access.
First, sign a contract with a private provider (like ottonova). Over 30 you don't need an exemption from statutory insurance. You can switch from public to private health insurance when you're turning 30. You'll need to provide proof of your new private coverage to cancel your public or private health insurance.
