What about travel insurances such as Mawista or Cigna instead of a German health insurance for expats?
If Germany is your home country for at least the next couple of years, travel insurances are not a viable option for obtaining a visa in Germany as they are not compliant with §257 SGB V, §61(6) SGB XI. Unlike ottonova, these insurances also don't contribute to the required long-term nursing care insurance (Pflegepflichtversicherung). Pay less when you get older
We can answer your most important question. We do indeed offer premium relief for when you get older. Guaranteed. You can think of it as a big piggy bank, in which you can save capital as a buffer for old age. Best of all, your employer will contribute up to 50% to these additional savings.
If you fall ill as an employee, your employer will usually compensate you financially for 42 days. However, in order to have longer-term illnesses covered, it would be prudent to take out daily sickness allowance insurance. We will then step in and compensate you for your lost income.
If accommodation in a private room is less important to you, but you still want premium all-around health coverage, you could take out our First Class plan with the option of accommodation in a double room.
Flexible deductible for lower premiums
Deductible or excess means that you contribute a small percentage to your health care costs. This reduces your monthly premium, and you automatically pay less.
The good thing about ottonova: Your maximum deductible in private health insurance for employees applies to the entire year and not to each invoice. And dental care as well als preventive check-ups are excluded. This means that once the maximum yearly amount has been reached, you will no longer incur any deductible costs and you will be reimbursed 100% for all further invoices until the end of the year.

Normally, private insurance plans help you to save for your future - you'll pay more now, so that your premiums don't rise later. But if you're only planning on staying in Germany for a short time - less than 60 months - then there's no need to set this extra money aside.
The laws in Germany only allow residents with a limited residency permit to sign up for expat plans. Unfortunately, this means we can only offer this special tariff to expats who are here on a permit, and not those who can live in Germany without any type of visa.
As a regulated health insurance, we cannot just increase premiums any time we want. Premiums can increase when actual health costs in general differ more than 5% from what we calculated. This can only happen due to inflation and rising medical costs.
However, this will never happen for single individuals but rather for all insured people at the same time. Specifically, we cannot increase your premiums because you get sick or because you get older. We also cannot terminate your contract for those reasons. We guarantee you coverage for a lifetime when you sign up.
You can start your sign-up process from abroad. As soon as you arrive in Germany, we will organize a general check-up with an English-speaking nurse for you. When we receive the results, we will be able to finalize your policy.

We are regulated in § 257 SGB V, which is necessary for your visa applications. This also includes the Expat tariff.
